Man Pleads Not Guilty to Attempted Murder in NYC McDonald's Stabbing

Juan Mercedes, 25, has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder in connection with the alleged stabbing of an Australian tourist at a New York City McDonald's on August 17. Mercedes was indicted on charges of attempted murder, assault, attempted assault, and criminal possession of a weapon.

Prosecutors allege that Mercedes approached the Australian teenager from behind and stabbed him in the torso as he dined with friends at a McDonald's near Penn Station. The unprovoked attack left the tourist with a collapsed lung and requiring stitches. Authorities claim Mercedes then pursued the victim's friend, attempting to swing the knife at him, but missed.

Mercedes was arrested nearby shortly after the incident. Police stated he was still holding the knife when officers approached him and ordered him to drop it.

The Australian victim, whose identity has not been released, was hospitalized and continues to suffer from his injuries, according to the Manhattan District Attorney's Office. District Attorney Alvin Bragg issued a statement emphasizing the city's commitment to visitor safety and condemning the alleged attack.

"New York City welcomes visitors from around the world, and those visitors deserve to feel safe while enjoying our city," Bragg said. "As alleged, Juan Mercedes attacked two young tourists who were spending time together, senselessly stabbing a teenager in one of Manhattan's busiest and most visited neighborhoods. I wish the teenager – who continues to suffer from his injuries – a thorough recovery."

Mercedes's next court appearance is scheduled for December 3. Some regular customers have expressed concerns about safety at the Eighth Avenue McDonald's, particularly late at night, citing frequent disturbances.
