Man Pleads Guilty to Murdering Mother

Adrian Hardy, 52, pleaded guilty to murdering his mother, Joan Hardy, 72, at the home they shared this summer. He appeared in tears at Derby Crown Court on Tuesday.

Hardy, a former factory worker with a history of alcohol problems, was remanded in custody. He will be sentenced in December.

Mrs. Hardy, a retired dinner lady, was found with stab wounds at her home in Linton, South Derbyshire, on Sunday, June 21. Neighbors described her as a "lovely woman" with a "heart of gold" who called her home her "sanctuary."

Neighbors also referred to Hardy as a "trouble maker" and "alcoholic" who had been living with his mother intermittently. They expressed shock at the incident, noting the peaceful nature of their neighborhood.

One neighbor, who recalled Mrs. Hardy from her time as a dinner lady at Linton Primary School, described her as a "good soul" who lived a quiet life after her husband, Richard, an Army veteran, died in 2023.

Hardy has prior convictions, including driving offenses and obstructing an engine. In 2015, he caused significant disruption and cost to Network Rail after walking through railway tunnels at Birmingham's New Street Station. He had told officers he wanted to harm himself and admitted to drinking nine pints of alcohol. He was given a 12-month community order and ordered to pay compensation in that case, with the judge noting he was receiving help for alcohol problems.
