Man Pleads Guilty to 2023 Murder of Lauren Heike on Phoenix Hiking Trail
Zion Teasley agrees to life in prison without parole to avoid death penalty in stabbing death of 29-year-old woman.
Zion Teasley has pleaded guilty to the first-degree premeditated murder of Lauren Heike, who was found dead with multiple stab wounds along a north Phoenix hiking trail in April 2023. Teasley also entered a guilty plea to a separate sexual exploitation of a minor charge stemming from conduct in 2019.
Under the plea agreement, Teasley is expected to be sentenced to natural life in prison, and prosecutors have withdrawn their pursuit of the death penalty. His sentencing is scheduled for December 4. Charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and first-degree burglary from 2020 were voluntarily dismissed as part of the agreement.
Heike, 29, was discovered by a resident along a community trail. Police reported she sustained 15 stab wounds, with additional injuries to her hands and forearms. Investigators believe Heike was chased and that her body and belongings were scattered along the trail. Evidence including DNA, surveillance video, and cellphone location data linked Teasley to the crime. Investigators found no prior communication between Heike and Teasley, and initially believed the attack was random.
During questioning, Teasley reportedly stated that Heike appeared to be "what I would want to look like." A screenshot also allegedly revealed Teasley's state of mind, stating, "When I see a beautiful woman and I'm a man."
Teasley was a former Marine recruit who was separated from training in June 2019, months after enlisting. He had also been fired from a previous job for being "aggressive toward female employees" and was suspected of stealing merchandise.
Heike's family stated they had supported prosecutors' initial decision to seek the death penalty but ultimately agreed with the plea deal, ensuring Teasley will spend the rest of his life in prison without the possibility of release.
