Luigi Mangione has pleaded guilty to federal charges in the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, admitting he used a 3-D printed gun with a silencer. The plea took place in federal court.

Mangione's admission resolves a case that drew national attention. The U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Jamie McDonald, commended the prosecution and law enforcement for their work in securing the guilty plea. "No grievance, political belief, or ideological cause can justify murder," McDonald stated. "With today’s guilty plea, Mangione is being held accountable for a heinous crime that claimed an innocent life and drew national attention."

Thompson's family released a statement expressing gratitude for the justice system holding the responsible party accountable. "While nothing will ease the pain of losing him, we are grateful that the federal justice system has held the person responsible for this heinous act accountable," the family said. "Now we look to the court to ensure the sentencing reflects the severity of this crime."

UnitedHealth Group, Thompson's employer, also issued a statement. "Brian Thompson's life was cut short by an act of violence that devastated everyone who knew and loved him. We are grateful to law enforcement for bringing Brian's murderer to justice, and our thoughts remain with Brian's family and loved ones during this difficult time," the company said.
