A man's alleged plan to terrorize his girlfriend in Tasmania escalated tragically when he fatally crashed into an innocent nurse driving home from work. The 42-year-old Western Australian man, identified in media reports as Keith Mitton, first flew from Perth to Tasmania and carried out a stabbing attack on his girlfriend, Sarah, at her home in Exeter on Friday, July 24.
Following the attack, Mitton fled south towards Launceston in a blue Skoda. According to a source with knowledge of the events, he was carrying fuel drums in his vehicle and veered into other cars before colliding head-on with 39-year-old nurse Elaine Gee's Nissan Navara near Legana. The collision resulted in an explosion, and Mitton died at the scene. Ms. Gee, a mother of two, was returning home to Winkleigh after finishing a nursing shift at Launceston Hospital. She died on Sunday, July 26, from her injuries.
Sarah, Mitton's girlfriend of six months, is recovering from serious stab wounds. Media reports indicate the weapon missed her vital organs, but she remains in a critical condition. Her two daughters were present at the home during the attack but did not witness it directly. Sarah's family, who are known to the Gee family within the local community, have described the events as "impossible to comprehend." A GoFundMe has been established to support Sarah and her children, with funds intended for medical expenses, rehabilitation, schooling, and counseling.
Ms. Gee's family has also been devastated by her death. Her husband, Rodney Gee, described his wife's death as "unfair, and crap" and the worst day of their family's lives. He stated their focus would be on raising their two young sons, aged six and ten, to become the men his wife envisioned. A GoFundMe for the Gee family, created by a friend, has already raised a significant portion of its $250,000 target. A statement on the fundraiser described Ms. Gee as having been "tragically killed in a senseless act of violence," noting she was "completely innocent, simply in the wrong place at the wrong time."
Ms. Gee was a nurse at Launceston Hospital for 20 years. She and her husband Rodney had been together since they were 15 years old. The series of events has prompted widespread grief and calls for action regarding domestic violence. Celebrity Christie Hayes commented on the national crisis of violence against women, stating, "This isn't a political slogan, it's a national crisis."
