Man Killed by Tiger After Entering Enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park

A man has died after entering a tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park, leading to an investigation by the City of Doncaster Council. The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon when the unnamed man climbed into the enclosure housing Altai, a 200kg male Siberian tiger.

Moments before the fatal attack, the man was seen dancing to music on a walkway above the enclosure and asked a witness, Del Taylor, to take a photograph of him with the tiger in the background. Taylor recounted that the man seemed happy and asked for multiple photos before attempting to climb into the enclosure. She described onlookers attempting to restrain him before he fell approximately 12 feet.

During the attack, the man reportedly screamed "stop" multiple times and made a gesture in Makaton, a sign language system. Distressing footage of the incident circulated online, showing the tiger interacting with the man before he was pronounced dead. Emergency services, including an air ambulance, were dispatched to the scene, but lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful. Zookeepers attempted to drive the tiger away using acoustic blasts.

Del Taylor, who took the man's final photograph, later shared a tearful video on social media, appealing to those making light of the incident online to consider the man's potential state of mind and the circumstances leading to his actions. She expressed distress at seeing disrespectful comments and speculation about the deceased.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park has confirmed that the tiger, Altai, will not be euthanized as a result of the incident. The park was closed for the remainder of Saturday following the event. The Land of the Tigers attraction at the park, which opened in 2011, is a two-acre reserve for Amur tigers, an endangered subspecies.

The City of Doncaster Council, as the licensing authority for the park, has initiated a health and safety investigation and is collaborating with other agencies, including the police and health authorities. The council has stated it will not comment further on the investigation or the individual involved out of respect for privacy during this difficult time.
