Man Jailed for Multi-Million Pound Fake Vinyl Operation

Rehan Ahmed has been jailed for three and a half years after masterminding an operation that produced around 200,000 counterfeit vinyl records, generating an estimated £2.7 million over seven years. The fake records featured music from artists including The Beatles, Madonna, and Ed Sheeran.

Ahmed utilized old equipment and rudimentary methods to press music onto blank vinyl discs, then packaged them to mimic authentic releases. He sold these counterfeit records to various retailers, including record shops and high street stores, as well as directly to collectors. The operation was uncovered when the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) conducted a test purchase, revealing the copyright infringement and prompting a police investigation.

City of London Police raided Ahmed's manufacturing facility in Acton, west London, seizing nearly 3,000 vinyl records, four 70-year-old vinyl presses, and 3,000 metal stampers. The total seizure weighed 18 tons, representing what authorities described as the UK's largest seizure of counterfeit vinyl records.

Ahmed, 40, of Southall, west London, was found guilty of orchestrating the long-running and organized scheme at Inner London Crown Court. Detective Constable Daryl Fryatt of the Metropolitan Police stated that the force would continue to pursue individuals targeting creative industries. The counterfeit records were distributed under Ahmed's company name, Phoenix of Vinyl.

Peter Ratcliffe of the BPI highlighted the significance of the conviction, noting that while it cannot recover the tens of millions of pounds lost to artists, labels, and retailers, it has shut down a major criminal enterprise. He added that the case sends a clear message to other counterfeiters operating in the music industry.
