Man jailed for killing grandfather who intervened in fight

Ethan Cockram, 21, pleaded guilty to manslaughter after punching Simon Beston, 55, who had attempted to break up a street altercation. Mr. Beston sustained a fractured skull and brain swelling from the impact, dying in hospital three weeks after the assault.

The incident occurred on July 25 last year when Mr. Beston and his partner encountered a group of intoxicated youths near Newcastle Racecourse. The group, reportedly celebrating Ladies Day, began assaulting a stranger. When Mr. Beston intervened to de-escalate the situation, one of the youths' companions began arguing with his partner, pulling her to the ground. Mr. Beston went to her defense, was pushed to the floor, and subsequently kicked by Lola Charlton and Shayne Cook, both now 20.

After getting back on his feet, Mr. Beston made a "placatory gesture" before Cockram delivered the fatal blow. This punch rendered Mr. Beston unconscious, causing him to hit his head on the kerb.

Cockram was on police bail at the time of the offense, having committed another assault just three months prior in which one victim was seriously injured. Under current guidelines, Cockram may serve as little as 40% of his sentence, approximately 23 months, in custody.

Shayne Cook was sentenced to 18 months for affray, and Lola Charlton received a nine-month suspended sentence and 120 hours of unpaid work for their roles in the incident.

In a victim impact statement, Mr. Beston's partner described the profound grief and survivor's guilt she experiences. She highlighted the loss of their shared future and the impact on his extended family, including his mother, daughter, and granddaughter.

"He was the person I shared my home, my life and my future with," she stated. "In one moment, everything we had planned and everything I knew was taken away from me."

Mr. Beston's mother spoke of the devastation of seeing her son in hospital and the ongoing difficulty of managing without his help. His daughter noted the added trauma of losing her father due to another's actions rather than natural causes.

During mitigation for Cockram, his defense stated he is "haunted" by Mr. Beston's death.

Detective Inspector Ashley Loader of Northumbria Police commented on the case, emphasizing how quickly acts of violence can escalate and the lasting impact they have. "A moment of aggression has resulted in a family losing a loved one, with the effects of that loss being felt by many people for years to come," he said. "Everyone has a responsibility to think before they act. Do not let a momentary lapse in judgement become something you regret for the rest of your life."
