Man Jailed for Decade After Brutal Abuse Campaign and Fleeing to Thailand
Nicholas Cash received nearly 10 years imprisonment for a series of assaults and coercive behavior against his ex-girlfriend, including drowning her rabbit, before attempting to evade justice by fleeing the country.
Nicholas Cash, 26, was sentenced to eight years in prison for a ten-month campaign of domestic abuse and an additional 16 months for breaching bail conditions and a suspended sentence. The abuse against Olivia Croft included slashing her with glass, confining her, and shooting her with a BB gun. Cash also coerced Ms. Croft into an overdose and controlled her life by dictating her appearance and monitoring her communications.
The abuse escalated when Cash drowned one of Ms. Croft's rabbits by flushing it down the toilet, an act that prompted her to go to the police. Cash was scheduled to stand trial in 2022 but absconded to Thailand with a new partner and infant, later leaving them for a Thai woman.
After evading authorities for nearly four years, Cash was apprehended in Thailand in December and subjected to extradition proceedings. He spent nine months in a Thai prison before being returned to Britain last month. He was convicted in his absence of controlling or coercive behavior, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, criminal damage, and administering a noxious substance with intent.
During sentencing at Bournemouth Crown Court, Cash appeared via video link and sobbed. His defense attorney argued his flight was an impulsive act driven by fear of incarceration. The defense stated Cash found his time in a Thai prison to be a harrowing experience. However, the judge ruled that time served in Thailand could not be counted towards his sentence, citing Cash's determined effort to evade justice.
Ms. Croft described the abuse as sickening and stated she was initially too afraid to leave for fear of him harming others. She recounted the psychological toll of the ordeal, including persistent nightmares and severe trust issues, which have altered her once social and outgoing personality. She expressed relief that he has been brought to justice, though the ordeal has left her feeling emotionally blunted and numb.
