Leon Gillespie, 26, was fined after climbing onto the roof of Ysbyty Glan Clwyd hospital in St Asaph, Denbighshire, while wearing a Grim Reaper costume. The incident, which occurred on Saturday, saw Gillespie overlook the hospital entrance for approximately 50 minutes, holding what appeared to be a long blade.
Four police cars and firefighters responded to the scene. Gillespie, from Deganwy, pleaded guilty to the offense at Llandudno magistrates court and received a £200 fine. He was ordered to pay £50 in compensation, a £100 fine, and £100 in costs to the Crown Prosecution Service.
In addition to the hospital incident, Gillespie also admitted to separate charges of stealing £30-£40 worth of cat food and litter from Pets at Home in Llandudno on March 26, and food and drink from Sainsbury's in Llandudno on May 28. No specific reason was provided for his actions on the hospital roof, though his costume was also described by some as resembling a crow.
A spokesperson for Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board stated that the health board maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards abuse, aggression, or nuisance on its hospital sites.
