Man Fatally Shot Outside Melbourne Home Amid Suspected Gangland Hit Investigation
Homicide detectives are investigating the death of a 42-year-old man in Wollert, with CCTV capturing a woman's screams and two men fleeing the scene.
A 42-year-old man was found dead outside his suburban Melbourne home on Thursday evening after reports of gunshots, prompting a homicide investigation into a suspected targeted killing.
Emergency services were called to Gypsum Drive in Wollert, a northern suburb, around 5:30 p.m. Police discovered the man, who had sustained injuries consistent with a shooting. The man has not yet been formally identified.
CCTV footage obtained by Outlaw Media shows two men fleeing the scene and escaping in a Holden Commodore sedan. Harrowing audio accompanying the footage includes a woman screaming after reportedly discovering the man.
Investigators are exploring the possibility that the shooting was a targeted attack. The deceased is understood to have been an associate of Kazem 'Kaz' Hamad, a former Melbourne underworld figure deported to Iraq in 2023. Hamad was reportedly a key figure in Melbourne's tobacco wars, a conflict allegedly linked to firebombings as rival groups vied for control of the illicit tobacco market.
In July, Hamad was found guilty by the Karkh Criminal Court in Baghdad of importing drugs into Iraq and Australia and was sentenced to life imprisonment.
As of Friday morning, no arrests had been made in connection with the Wollert shooting, and police have not released further details. Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000.
