A 35-year-old man was fatally shot in his driveway in Sydney's northwest on Wednesday morning, with detectives discovering a GPS tracker affixed to his vehicle. Jack Cheung was attacked just after 5:30 a.m. as he entered his car at his home on North Rocks Road in Carlingford.
Tradies arriving for a job approximately 90 minutes later discovered Cheung unresponsive in his vehicle. He could not be revived by emergency services. The gunman remains at large.
Authorities confirmed Cheung was known to police and had a minor criminal history, including a past charge for possessing an unauthorized firearm. While he was not believed to be involved in organized crime, police sources indicated his brother is reportedly a member of the Coconut Cartel, a known Sydney criminal group.
Cheung lived at the residence with his mother, who was on vacation in Thailand at the time of the shooting and is now returning home. Neighbors described Cheung as a quiet man who was passionate about cars and frequently worked on his vehicle.
Acting Superintendent Michael Marinello stated that police are exploring whether underworld connections were a motive for the attack. "It's not something that we're discounting—but it's not something that we can confirm at this time," Marinello told reporters. He characterized the incident as a "very brazen attack" but reassured the public that it was not believed to be random and that there is no ongoing threat.
Individuals who were home at the time of the incident are cooperating with investigators. Police are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.
