An investigation is underway after a man was shot and killed by police on Sunday near the southern New South Wales town of Yass.

Emergency services were dispatched around 2:50 p.m. to Corringle Lane, near Rugby Road in Rugby, approximately 84 kilometers north of Yass, following reports of a car that had crashed into a tree.

Officers from The Hume Police District arrived at the scene and found a Chrysler station wagon that had collided with a tree. The driver appeared to be unconscious.

As officers approached the man and attempted to provide aid, he allegedly aimed a rifle at them, at which point police discharged their firearms. Officers immediately began CPR on the driver, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. The man, believed to be 45 years old, has not yet been formally identified. No police officers were injured during the incident.

A crime scene has been established, and a critical incident team from State Crime Command's Homicide Squad will lead the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The investigation will undergo an independent review by the Professional Standards Command and will be overseen by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.

Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact Crime Stoppers.
