Man Fatally Attacked on Tube Platform After Notting Hill Carnival; Family Mourns

The family of Thomas Jewitt, 32, has paid tribute to him after he died following an assault on a Central Line platform at Liverpool Street station. Jewitt was attacked on Sunday, August 30, while making his way home from the Notting Hill Carnival.

He was taken to the hospital in critical condition and succumbed to his injuries three days later. British Transport Police confirmed that they will seek to amend the charge against the accused.

Jeremiah Maximo, 38, a British national from Barking, had initially been charged with grievous bodily harm on September 1. He was scheduled to appear at Highbury Corner Magistrates' Court. Following Jewitt's death, the charge is expected to be altered, and Maximo will appear in court at a later date.

Police responded to reports of a "serious assault" at approximately 10:51 p.m. on August 30. Investigators believe Jewitt had attended the carnival's "family day" in west London. The August Bank Holiday weekend marked the 60th anniversary of the Notting Hill Carnival, an event estimated to have drawn one to two million attendees.

In a statement, Jewitt's family expressed their grief and disbelief. "We can't believe that Tom has been taken from us. Tom was fun-loving, caring and kind. He always looked out for others and made them feel better," they said. They described his successful career in affordable housing and a bright future that was "taken away from him too soon," noting his excitement about marrying his fiancée next year. "Tom is deeply loved by his family, his many, many friends and his work colleagues. We will draw what strength we can from the wonderful memories we have of Tom," the family statement concluded.

Detective Superintendent Sam Blackburn of the British Transport Police stated, "First and foremost our thoughts are firmly with the loved ones of the young man who has sadly died. They are being supported by specially trained officers as our investigation continues." Blackburn added, "We continue to appeal to anyone who saw what happened and has not yet spoken to police to come forward and assist our investigation. Any piece of information could be vital to us." He previously confirmed, "We know the victim was travelling back from Notting Hill Carnival at the time of the incident."
