The park has been closed following the incident on Saturday afternoon, with authorities investigating the circumstances.
Yorkshire Wildlife Park remains closed after a man was fatally attacked by a tiger after climbing into its enclosure on Saturday afternoon. The incident occurred near Doncaster, South Yorkshire, prompting a response from police and ambulance services.
According to an eyewitness, the man was seen wearing headphones and pacing near the enclosure before entering it, where he was subsequently attacked. Police confirmed the man died at the scene. The park has stated that the Amur tiger involved, named Altai, will not be euthanized.
The park's emergency response procedures were immediately activated, and officials are cooperating with authorities to determine the exact sequence of events. Staff members who witnessed the incident are receiving specialized support.
Witnesses described confusion and distress among park visitors as the area was evacuated. One visitor noted that someone attempted to deter the tiger from a nearby walkway. Another visitor reported hearing what sounded like gunshots and observing an air ambulance circling the area.
Yorkshire Wildlife Park, which opened in 2009, features a Land of the Tigers area that houses Amur tigers, an endangered subspecies. The enclosure is designed with a raised walkway for visitors and protective fencing.
Local Members of Parliament expressed their sadness and offered condolences to the deceased's family, also extending gratitude to the emergency services and park staff for their response.
