A 57-year-old man died Monday evening after he was dragged by a New York City subway train, police said. The incident occurred around 6 p.m. at a Brooklyn subway station when the man, identified as Yaw Boahene, was exiting the train.

According to police, a shopping bag Boahene was carrying became snagged in the closing doors of the train. He was pulled onto the tracks and run over by the train as it departed the station. Officers found Boahene unconscious and unresponsive on the tracks; he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has removed the train operator and conductor from service, a standard procedure during investigations. The MTA stated that the train involved was one of the fleet's newest models, and it was inspected after the man's death and again in July, with no mechanical issues found.

An investigation into the death is ongoing, and the medical examiner's office will determine the official cause of death. Fatalities involving trains dragging passengers due to caught clothing or bags have occurred previously in the city's subway system. In 2022, a 20-year-old commuter was killed when a backpack or piece of clothing got stuck in a train door at the Columbus Circle station in Manhattan.
