Man Dragged to Death by NYC Subway Train After Bag Snags
A shopping bag caught in a closing subway door led to a fatal incident during Monday evening rush hour.
A 57-year-old man died after being dragged by a New York City subway train when his shopping bag became caught in the closing doors during the Monday evening commute. The incident occurred around 6 p.m. at a Brooklyn subway station.
Authorities identified the victim as Yaw Boahene, a Brooklyn resident. Police stated that as Boahene was exiting the train, his bag snagged in the doors. The train departed the station, pulling him onto the tracks where he was run over.
Officers arriving at the scene found Boahene unconscious and unresponsive on the tracks. He was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel. The medical examiner's office will determine the official cause of death, and the police investigation into the incident is ongoing.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which operates the subway system, referred inquiries about the incident to the police.
Fatalities from being dragged by subway trains are not unprecedented in New York City's transit system. In 2022, a 20-year-old commuter was killed when a part of their clothing or a backpack got caught in a train door as they attempted to board at the Columbus Circle station in Manhattan.
