A man died and a woman sustained critical injuries in a two-vehicle crash that concluded a police pursuit on Monday evening near Stratford-upon-Avon.
Warwickshire Police reported that officers attempted to stop a black Audi on Birmingham Road shortly before 5:30 p.m. local time. The driver did not comply, leading to a pursuit.
Approximately fifteen minutes later, the Audi collided with a white Ford Puma. Paramedics confirmed the male driver of the Audi deceased at the scene. The female driver of the Ford sustained serious injuries and remains in hospital in critical condition.
Investigation Launched
An investigation into the incident has been initiated by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), the police watchdog, due to the death that occurred following police contact. Superintendent Steve Flavell stated that the force has made a mandatory referral to the IOPC and will cooperate fully with their independent investigation. He also conveyed the thoughts of the police to the families of those involved and confirmed that specialist support is being provided.
Pursuit Details and Road Closures
According to police, after failing to stop, the Audi traveled in the direction of the A46 before returning towards Stratford on the A439 Warwick Road, where the collision took place. The pursuit also resulted in damage to a number of other vehicles.
The A439 Warwick Road has been closed from the Marraway roundabout to its junction with Ingon Lane and Sandbanks Lane. Authorities advised drivers to seek alternative routes, anticipating the road would remain shut for an extended period.
Road Safety Measures
It was noted that roadworks were completed on the A439 Warwick Road approximately two years prior, with the aim of reducing crashes in the vicinity. Warwickshire County Council had implemented a one-way system, lowered the speed limit, and installed a protected turning lane at the Ingon Lane junction. Additionally, street lighting was improved to enhance visibility for pedestrians crossing near Fisherman's Car Park.
