Man Dies Saving Daughters from Riptide, Widow Recounts Harrowing Ordeal

Julie Pepperman vividly recalls the day her husband, Fred, died saving their daughters from a treacherous riptide. In her account, Fred Pepperman yelled to his daughter Olivia, "I got you. You'll be okay" as he fought to rescue their children from the powerful ocean currents.

Fred Pepperman was 53 years old when he lost his life during the family's summer vacation in 2019. The incident occurred off the coast of the Gulf Coast, a location they had visited for annual family vacations. This would be their last trip together.

"My husband died saving our daughters' lives in a vicious riptide... I'll never forget his harrowing final moments and heartbreaking promise before being dragged out to sea," Julie Pepperman stated. She described the ocean as threatening to pull her under as she heard her father's words.

Julie and Fred met in 1987 at a Louisiana summer camp when he was 21 and she was 16. They dated for five years before marrying. Fred was described as a devoted father who was heavily involved in his children's lives, coaching sports teams and driving them to out-of-town tournaments. "He thrived on being around people,' Julie said. 'He was always one of those people. If he could help somebody, he did, and he didn't always tell me.'

Julie views her husband's selfless actions as nothing short of heroic. It has been seven summers since Fred's death, but the immense loss felt by his widow and their four daughters remains profound, especially as they approach what would have been his 61st birthday.
