A man has died in hospital days after a suspected gas explosion completely destroyed his bungalow in Newton Longville, near Milton Keynes. The man, believed to be 67-year-old Stephen Woodward, suffered approximately 85 percent burns to his body in the blast on Sunday, August 9.

Emergency services, including four fire engines from Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, were dispatched to the property around 9:44 a.m. following reports of an explosion. Doorbell video footage showed bricks and debris being ejected onto the street, causing damage to neighboring homes and vehicles. Plumes of black smoke were visible rising from the property in the aftermath.

Stephen Woodward, known locally as Steve, was inside his home with his Doberman, Milly, at the time of the explosion. Both were rescued and treated for burns. Milly, who sustained two burns, was taken to a veterinarian and has since been released to a family member.

Thames Valley Police announced the man's death and stated they are managing a coronial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the explosion and property collapse, working jointly with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). The HSE has confirmed it is leading the investigation into the cause, though gas company SGN has stated the cause is currently unknown. "This is a tragic development and our thoughts are with the man's family and friends at this extremely difficult time," said Detective Inspector Philip Turner-Robson.

A cordon remains in place on Cobb Hall Road, and more than 20 homes were evacuated as a precautionary measure while gas engineers and police officers remained on site. Some residents reportedly smelled gas prior to the explosion.

Community members have initiated fundraising efforts. Wing Sports and Social Club, where Mr. Woodward was a frequent attendee, has set up an appeal to create a memorial in his honor. Thomas Humphries, who launched a GoFundMe page, aims to provide support for the homeowner and other residents affected by the incident.
