Man Dies After Medical Episode in NYPD Custody
Reginald Newkirk, 54, arrested on drug charges, experienced a health decline at a Brooklyn precinct.
A 54-year-old man arrested by the NYPD died on Sunday after experiencing a medical episode while in custody at a Brooklyn precinct, according to police.
Reginald Newkirk had been detained at the 67th Precinct in Flatbush awaiting transfer to criminal court for arraignment when his health deteriorated. Emergency responders transported Newkirk to a local hospital around 2:15 p.m. on Saturday. He remained hospitalized and was pronounced dead on Sunday. His cause of death is currently unknown.
Newkirk was arrested on Friday on charges of criminal possession of a controlled substance. The NYPD's Force Investigation Division is investigating his death.
This incident follows the death of another detainee on September 9 who suffered a medical episode and died inside the Central Courts Building in Downtown Brooklyn. In April, two other individuals, Hector Sierra, 51, and Zamiqua Miller, 33, died after experiencing withdrawal symptoms while in NYPD custody.
