Man Dies After Girlfriend Crashes Car at 93 MPH
Leigha Mumby faces vehicular homicide charges following the February 2025 incident that killed Daniel Waterman eight months later.
A New York man died in October 2025 from injuries sustained eight months prior when his girlfriend, Leigha Mumby, crashed a vehicle at 93 mph, according to reports.
Daniel Waterman, 22, a landscaper from Liverpool, New York, was a passenger in the car driven by Mumby, 25, when the crash occurred in February 2025. Waterman told a police investigator that Mumby deliberately crashed the car, according to an affidavit. He died on October 8, 2025, from injuries sustained in the crash.
Mumby has been charged with vehicular homicide and has pleaded not guilty. Her trial is scheduled to begin next week. She was accused of intentionally crashing the vehicle.
Waterman's family has drawn comparisons between Mumby's case and that of Mackenzie Shirilla, 23, who was convicted in August 2023 of killing her boyfriend and his friend by intentionally crashing their car into a brick wall in Ohio on July 31, 2022.
Waterman's relatives told the Daily Mail that the case is eerily similar to Shirilla's. They also claimed that on the day of the crash, Mumby made accusations of cheating against Waterman to his cousin, Sarah. Waterman's family stated that he attempted to pull his hand away when he realized Mumby was holding it in his hospital bed.
Waterman and Mumby met on the dating app Bumble in 2024. He was reportedly watching his team, the Kansas City Chiefs, play during the Super Bowl prior to the crash.
