A 55-year-old man has died after being attacked by a dog on a public footpath in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. Police have arrested the dog's owner on suspicion of murder and of owning a dog dangerously out of control.

The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon around 1:30 p.m. in the Calder Grove area of Wakefield, near the old train line footpath off Blacker Lane. Police received calls reporting an altercation between two men shortly before the dog bite.

The victim was taken to a hospital in critical condition and passed away later that evening. The dog involved in the incident has been seized by authorities.

Detective Chief Inspector Michael Cox of the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team appealed for witnesses, particularly two women, one named Sophie, who stopped to help the injured man and direct officers. He urged anyone who may have seen or heard any part of the altercation between the two men to come forward to assist with the ongoing investigation.

Authorities are continuing their inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the man's death.
