A man died early Saturday morning in San Marcos, California, after he allegedly attempted to carjack a moving truck while it was in motion. The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office identified the suspect as 56-year-old Mark Douglas Heninger.
The incident occurred in the 200 block of South Pacific Street when Heninger reportedly entered the moving truck, described as belonging to Blue Wave Tree Care, while brandishing a knife. The driver of the truck fought back, causing Heninger to fall from the vehicle onto the roadway.
Paramedics responded to the scene and treated Heninger, who was transported to a local hospital. He was later pronounced dead from head trauma. The truck driver sustained minor injuries and declined medical attention.
Investigators stated that alcohol or drugs do not appear to be factors in the incident. The medical examiner's office is conducting its final determination of the cause of death. The motive for the alleged carjacking remains under investigation by homicide detectives.
Court records indicate a man with the same name and age as the suspect has a criminal history dating back to 1996.
