Man Critically Injured in Malaga Restaurant Shooting; Police Search for Suspects
Authorities are searching for two gunmen who opened fire at a busy waterfront restaurant in Malaga, critically wounding a diner.
A police manhunt is underway on the Costa del Sol for two individuals suspected of shooting a diner in the face at a popular restaurant in Malaga.
The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday at Lounge Bar Plaza, a Mediterranean eatery located on the Muelle Uno waterfront promenade. The victim, identified by local media as a Turkish national born in 1979, was reportedly with another man and two women at the time of the attack. He was struck in the face and taken to a Malaga hospital in critical condition.
Customers and bystanders initially mistook the gunshots for firecrackers before fleeing in panic. The area was cordoned off by police as officers launched a search for the two alleged attackers. No arrests have been made.
The shooting took place in a bustling area that had seen increased foot traffic due to the World Cup trophy, won by Spain, being on display at the nearby Pompidou Centre. Many families with children were dining in the vicinity.
This is the second shooting in Malaga in less than a week. On Friday, a 20-year-old man, identified only as Nacho, died after being shot in the city center. Police are investigating the theory that Nacho, who had no criminal record, may have been mistaken for a hitman due to his attire.
Earlier in September, on September 8, two Danish nationals and a Dutchman were arrested following a police chase in Marbella in connection with the shooting of a Dutch national. That incident, which occurred around 2:15 p.m., is believed to be linked to feuding between rival drug gangs.
On August 24, a 33-year-old Senegalese man was shot and killed in Marbella. Initially thought to be a hit-and-run victim, it was later confirmed he had sustained two gunshot wounds to the abdomen.
These incidents have prompted concerns about organized crime in southern Spain. The Chief Prosecutor of Spain's Special Anti-Drug Prosecutor's Office has called for increased resources to combat the issue, a sentiment echoed by Andalucia's president, Juanma Moreno, who stated that drug trafficking is a structural problem requiring a response from the central government.
