Man Convicted of Manslaughter After Fatal Altercation Over Child on Bike

Andre Wright-Walters, 38, has been convicted of manslaughter following an incident in Balham, southwest London, on August 24 of last year. The court heard that Wright-Walters punched 67-year-old James Gbadamosi twice in the face, causing him to fall and strike his head on the pavement. Mr. Gbadamosi died two weeks later from his injuries.

The altercation began when Mr. Gbadamosi, who was with his partner outside a Costa Coffee, reportedly told a young boy that he should not be riding a Lime bike on the pavement. This led to an exchange with a woman who then called Wright-Walters.

Prosecutor Ben Holt told the jury that Wright-Walters later arrived at the scene with a child on his shoulders. He confronted Mr. Gbadamosi, referencing the earlier interaction. Wright-Walters then allegedly punched and slapped Mr. Gbadamosi before delivering two blows to the face that knocked him to the ground.

Wright-Walters and the woman left the scene, but they were arrested three days later. During an interview, Wright-Walters stated that Mr. Gbadamosi had been aggressive and had entered his personal space, leading him to believe he was going to be assaulted. He claimed Mr. Gbadamosi appeared to want a fight and was walking towards him.

Wright-Walters was convicted of manslaughter by a jury at Kingston-upon-Thames Crown Court. He is scheduled to be sentenced on November 3. The jury's verdict was welcomed by Mr. Gbadamosi's family, who issued a statement thanking the police. They described Mr. Gbadamosi as an "affable, funny, intelligent and caring man" whose loss has left a significant void. Detective Inspector Sarah Philippe stated that the police's focus had been on securing answers for the family and hoped the verdict offered a measure of closure.
