Man Cleared in 1993 Welsh Farmhouse Murder Case

An 87-year-old man has been cleared of killing a couple with a shotgun at a Welsh farmhouse 33 years ago. The suspect was arrested in December last year as part of a renewed investigation into the murder of Harry and Megan Tooze, who were found shot dead in a cowshed at their farm in Llanharry, near Cardiff, on July 26, 1993.

South Wales Police launched Operation Vega in 2023, a forensic review of the cold case with the goal of uncovering new evidence. Ten months after the arrest, the man has been informed by police that he will face no further action.

Detective Superintendent Mark O'Shea stated that the family of Mr. and Mrs. Tooze are being supported as the review of the case continues. "We remain committed to solving these dreadful murders which happened more than three decades ago," O'Shea said. "It is never too late to come forward. Even with this passage of time I appeal to anyone who has any information about the murders to come forward and speak to us because information they have may help us get justice for the family."

Mr. and Mrs. Tooze, aged 64 and 67, left their home at Ty ar y Waun farm on the morning of July 26, 1993, to collect their pensions. Neighbors reported hearing two gunshots around 1:30 p.m., but the sounds were initially dismissed as common farmyard noise. Their bodies were discovered the following morning by a neighbor after their daughter's daily phone call went unanswered. Both had been shot in the head from behind at close range and their bodies concealed under hay bales.

Following the murders, a large police investigation led to the arrest of Jonathan Jones, the boyfriend of the couple's daughter. Jones was convicted and jailed for life in 1995, but his conviction was later deemed unsafe, and he was freed a year later. The couple's daughter, Cheryl Tooze, maintained her boyfriend's innocence and campaigned for his release, offering a £25,000 reward for information.

The case remained largely unresolved until the 30th anniversary of the murders, when Operation Vega was announced. The current forensic review is being supported by Professor Angela Gallop, a forensic scientist who has contributed to high-profile UK murder investigations. The review involves forensic analysis of all exhibits from the original crime scene.

A spokesperson for South Wales Police confirmed the decision regarding the 87-year-old man. "Following a thorough review of evidence by detectives carrying out a forensic review of the murder of Harry and Megan Tooze in 1993, the 87-year-old man who was arrested in December, 2025, has been advised that he is no longer under investigation and has been released with no further action. The forensic review of the case which is being led by the Major Crime Investigation Team at South Wales Police continues."
