Man City's Legacy at Stake Amid Premier League Charges, Former Player Argues

Manchester City's legacy is under threat if the club is found guilty in its ongoing dispute with the Premier League, according to former Liverpool player Graeme Souness. Sources indicate that City has been found guilty of 114 out of 115 alleged rule breaches, fueling accusations of widespread financial misconduct during a period of significant success.

Souness has argued that any eventual punishment should include stripping the club of its titles, suggesting that these could be awarded to teams like Liverpool, where applicable. "The legacy is gone," Souness stated. "If it goes the wrong way for them they'll be consigned to history that they were cheats and whatever they did, whatever they won in that period, should not count."

The Premier League charged Manchester City in February 2023 with offenses spanning a 14-year period, with the most serious allegations concentrated between 2009 and 2018. The club is accused of failing to provide accurate financial information for nine seasons and not cooperating with the investigation from 2018 to 2023. These charges were reportedly extended to 130 after an administrative issue, making it the most extensive case in English football history.

During the period in question, Manchester City secured eight Premier League titles, one Champions League, four FA Cups, and seven EFL Cups. Manager Pep Guardiola has consistently maintained his belief in the club's innocence, previously stating he would leave if he felt the hierarchy had lied to him, but later affirming his commitment even in the face of potential relegation.

Manchester City has publicly denied all charges, with Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak asserting the club's confidence in proving its innocence. The investigation initially stemmed from documents published by German outlet Der Spiegel in 2018, which originated from the Football Leaks cache. Allegations include the overstatement of sponsorship income through owner-funded payments and secret contracts for former manager Roberto Mancini.

This case follows a previous incident in February 2020, where Manchester City was banned from the Champions League and fined £25 million for misleading UEFA. That decision was later overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which reduced the fine to £9 million.
