Man City Manager Defends Celebrations Amidst Financial Rule Breach Appeal
Enzo Maresca stated that the team's joy after a significant victory was a natural expression of their on-field success.
Enzo Maresca, manager of Manchester City, has responded to criticism regarding the team's celebratory actions following their 3-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield. The celebrations occurred while the club is in the process of appealing verdicts related to alleged breaches of financial rules.
Maresca defended the team's right to express their happiness, stating, "We won 3-0 at Anfield! What do you want us to do? And even if it was 0-1, it would be exactly the same." He emphasized that the team's focus remains on winning future games and that their on-field joy is a genuine reaction to difficult achievements, particularly a win at Anfield. He noted that the celebrations were particularly meaningful for the fans.
"Inside the changing room we were very happy because we knew how difficult Anfield is. Anfield was unbelievable," Maresca added.
Captain Ruben Dias echoed Maresca's sentiments, asserting that the players will continue to celebrate with passion. "We'll celebrate however we feel in the moment. It'll be a show of how much things mean to us," Dias said. He acknowledged the external "noise" surrounding the club but stressed the team's ability to focus internally. "We trust the club. We know the team we've got and want to win. It's the same noise as before because people don't love us," he stated.
The team's celebrations, which included Maresca dancing on the touchline and gesturing with his fingers in his ears, drew criticism from some observers who labeled the actions as arrogant. The victory on Sunday extended Manchester City's lead at the top of the Premier League table. The team is preparing for their Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain at the Etihad Stadium.
