Man City Manager Brushes Off Charges as 'Noise' After Liverpool Victory
Enzo Maresca focused on on-field performance amid club's appeal against Premier League charges.
Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca dismissed the club's conviction on 114 Premier League charges as mere 'noise' on Sunday night, emphasizing the team's focus on winning matches following their 3-0 victory over Liverpool. Maresca, in high spirits after the win that kept City three points clear at the top of the league, stated he 'didn't care' how long the club's appeal process might take.
"The noise will always be there so we need to learn how to deal with that but at the same time we need to try and bring our noise, which is win games which is what we have done today," Maresca said. "At the end of the game, our fans were singing so the noise was from us and not the environment."
He added that the team needs to learn to manage external distractions and create their own positive atmosphere. "All the away games are going to be with noise so we need to learn how to deal with the noise. And at the same time, we need to make our noise. Our noise is we're singing at the end, our fans, and this has to be our target at the moment."
The match saw City fans chanting and Liverpool supporters calling them 'cheats'. Maresca expressed happiness with his team's performance and suggested that off-field issues might galvanize the squad, which has won its first six games of the season. "It can create togetherness with the fans. Hopefully we can celebrate a win. This is the only thing we can focus on."
City experienced hostility en route to Anfield, with fans lining the road. Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola commented on the situation, stating that "uncertainty is not good for anyone. But it is what it is, we cannot change it. We have to wait."
Iraola expressed pride in his players' performance despite the loss and a red card for Ryan Gravenberch. He felt Gravenberch's initial booking was undeserved. Liverpool has struggled at Anfield recently, winning only four league games there in ten months. Iraola noted that lessons could be learned from the match and that Dominik Szoboszlai is unlikely to be available for the upcoming game against LASK due to a hamstring injury.
Erling Haaland, who scored City's first goal, emphasized the importance of mental strength and unity. "It's important to stay strong mentally, stick together and do what you can do something about and the thing we can do something about is to play good football and fight together. That's the only thing we can do. It was tough. It was hard but we showed amazing character from back to front," Haaland said.
