Man City Held Secret Settlement Talks With Premier League, Report Claims

Manchester City engaged in undisclosed settlement negotiations with the Premier League prior to their guilty verdict on 115 charges of financial misconduct, according to a report by Bloomberg. These talks reportedly aimed to resolve the extensive list of charges, which range from 2009 to 2018, and could have resulted in a significant fine rather than the potential for extreme sanctions, including the stripping of titles or expulsion from the league.

The discussions collapsed because the club refused to accept any of the charges laid against them. If the club's appeal against the independent commission's ruling fails, they face severe punishments. Premier League chief executive Richard Masters has described the case as "the most significant in Premier League history."

City were found to have misrepresented their financial accounts, claiming commercial income of approximately £900 million over a nine-year period when only £119.25 million came from actual sponsors. The Premier League stated that the commission found the club arranged "sham contracts" with commercial partners and relied on "sham" agreements to artificially inflate revenues and reduce costs. These arrangements, funded by the Abu Dhabi United Group, masked the true financial state of the club from auditors and regulators.

The club has publicly maintained its innocence and is appealing the commission's decision. Manager Enzo Maresca expressed his trust in the club, stating that it was a primary reason for his decision to join. He indicated that he would have still accepted the role had he known about the impending verdict and expressed confidence in the club's organization.

Maresca also addressed concerns about the legitimacy of past titles won by the club, including their treble-winning season, suggesting that these achievements remain untarnished. He humorously noted his experience in winning the Championship with Leicester City, implying readiness for potential lower-league competition, but emphasized the importance of respecting the ongoing appeal process.

During a press conference ahead of City's match against Liverpool, Maresca acknowledged the seriousness of the situation but stressed the squad's focus on upcoming games. He reported a positive atmosphere within the team, with players remaining motivated as they currently lead the league.
