Man Charged with Murder in Fatal Tube Station Assault

Jeremiah Maximo, 38, has been charged with murder, manslaughter, and affray in connection with the death of Thomas Jewitt, who died days after an assault at Liverpool Street station. The incident occurred on the Central Line platform over the August bank holiday weekend.

Maximo appeared via video link at Inner London Crown Court on Thursday. He was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear at the same court on October 21. He did not enter a plea to the charges.

Jewitt, 32, who worked in affordable housing, sustained serious head injuries during the alleged assault. He had been on his way home from attending the Notting Hill Carnival's family day. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition and passed away three days later. He had been due to marry his fiancée next year.

Police responded to reports of a "serious assault" at the station at 10:51 p.m. on Sunday, August 30. British Transport Police initially authorized a charge of grievous bodily harm (GBH) against Maximo on September 1. Following Jewitt's death, the Crown Prosecution Service sought to amend the indictment.

Jewitt's family described him as "fun-loving, caring and kind," stating he "always looked out for others and made them feel better." They added that he had a "bright future" that was "taken away from him too soon." They expressed their devastation at his loss and their intention to draw strength from their memories of him.

The Notting Hill Carnival, which marked its 60th anniversary that weekend, is estimated to have drawn between one and two million attendees. British Transport Police Detective Superintendent Sam Blackburn stated that their thoughts are with Jewitt's loved ones and that specially trained officers are supporting them. He urged anyone who witnessed the incident and had not yet come forward to assist the investigation, emphasizing that "any piece of information could be vital."
