A 23-year-old man has been charged with murder in connection with a house fire that claimed the lives of a seven-year-old girl and her aunt in Middlesbrough. Valentina Foster, 7, and her aunt Natalie McDonald, 34, died in the blaze which engulfed a home in Grangetown shortly after 5 a.m. on Wednesday. Four other individuals sustained injuries in the incident.
A 31-year-old man arrested in connection with the fire was released without charge on Sunday. Wright is scheduled to appear at Teesside Magistrates' Court.
In a separate but previously unconfirmed link, police had initially stated they could not rule out a connection between the house fire and wider gang violence in Teesside. This followed a fatal collision on the A66 that killed seven people, including two police officers, PC Matthew Blades and PC Tom Clough. Authorities later confirmed the fire was not linked to the A66 crash.
In the early hours of Monday, armed police raided two homes on Burns Road in Grangetown as part of a separate investigation. Two men, aged 19 and 24, were arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence. These arrests followed an incident on Sunday night where a vehicle was rammed into another on Derwentwater Road.
The fatal A66 crash involved a Volkswagen Passat traveling the wrong way, which collided with a police vehicle. Five young men died in the collision: Michael Cahill, 23; Jakub Matusiak, 23; Makai Saddington, 18; Theo Rae, 17; and Cole Worthy, 17. Four of the young men had prior criminal records for offenses including theft, harassment, assault, drug dealing, and knife possession. An 18-year-old man has also been charged with dangerous driving in relation to an incident on Saturday.
In the aftermath of the house fire, Valentina's family and local residents gathered on Monday night to release dozens of pink and purple balloons in her favorite colors as a way to give her a 'best send off.'
Cleveland Police reported on Friday that a 48-year-old woman was in critical but stable condition at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, and a 27-year-old man was receiving treatment at James Cook University Hospital. Two teenage girls were discharged with non-life-threatening injuries.
Katie Nicolson, chief crown prosecutor for CPS North East, stated that prosecutors and police have gathered sufficient evidence for a court case and cautioned against any reporting that could prejudice the proceedings. A total of 27 people have been arrested in connection with the fatal A66 crash.
