Man Charged With Murder After Fatal Tube Station Assault

Jeremiah Maximo, 38, has been charged with murder, manslaughter, and affray in connection with the death of Thomas Jewitt, who was assaulted on a Tube platform over the August bank holiday weekend. Maximo appeared at Inner London Crown Court via video link and was remanded in custody.

Jewitt, 32, sustained serious head injuries during an alleged assault on the Central Line platform at Liverpool Street station. He was traveling home from the Notting Hill Carnival when the incident occurred on Sunday, August 30. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition and died three days later.

Maximo was originally charged with grievous bodily harm (GBH) on September 1. Following Jewitt's death, the Crown Prosecution Service authorized the upgraded charges. Maximo did not enter a plea and is scheduled to appear at the same court on October 21.

Thomas Jewitt worked in affordable housing and was due to marry his fiancée next year. His family described him as "fun-loving, caring and kind," adding that he "always looked out for others and made them feel better." They also stated that his "bright future was taken away from him too soon."

British Transport Police responded to reports of a serious assault at the station at 10:51 p.m. on August 30. Detective Superintendent Sam Blackburn of British Transport Police stated that the investigation is ongoing and appealed for anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward.
