French national Kevin Kerjean, who has been charged with the murder of a two-year-old girl in Chertsey, Surrey, had been granted leave to remain in the United Kingdom. Police confirmed that Kerjean's status was extended until 2031.

The child was understood to have been known to Kerjean, and police believe the incident occurred within a family setting. Authorities stated they are not seeking anyone else in connection with the incident.

Det Chief Supt Jon Groenen described the event as a "tragic incident" and said that investigation teams are working to establish a clear picture of what happened. A significant police presence is expected to remain in Pyrcroft Road for several days.

"We appreciate that all this will be concerning for residents and we would like to thank them for their co-operation as we conduct our investigation," Groenen added.
