Man Charged in Attack on Australian MP Helen Haines
The suspect's father states he and his partner have known the injured MP for over two decades.
A 43-year-old man has been charged in connection with the vehicle attack on Australian Member of Parliament Helen Haines. The suspect is facing charges including dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, and the federal offense of causing harm to a public official. He is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.
Local media identified the accused as environmental activist Brendan Nugent. His father and partner issued a statement describing themselves as long-time friends of Haines, stating they have known her "for more than 20 years." They expressed shock at the incident and thanked those who assisted Haines, calling it a "shocking and horrific crime."
Haines, 65, the independent member for Indi, remains in critical condition following surgery at a Melbourne hospital. Reports indicate she sustained severe injuries after being struck by a car outside her office in Wangaratta, Victoria. Bystanders intervened after the alleged attacker reportedly drove into Haines, reversed, and struck her again. She was pinned between two vehicles and subsequently lost a leg, with medical professionals working to save her other limb.
One witness, a local barber named Ricky Jefferies, described pulling the suspect from his car and disarming him of a knife, stating he intervened to prevent further harm. Other bystanders are noted to have immediately attended to Haines despite potential danger.
Victoria Police confirmed that a highway patrol unit was in the vicinity and responded within eight seconds. Following the announcement of charges, officers searched a property in Tarrawingee, approximately 60 kilometers from Wangaratta. Police have stated that the incident appears isolated and there are no other known threats connected to the matter, though a police presence will be maintained in Wangaratta.
Haines, elected as an independent in 2019, has become a notable figure in Australian politics. The community has gathered to express support, leaving flowers outside her office and attending vigils. The incident has drawn widespread shock across the community and the nation.
