Man Charged After Allegedly Attempting to Open Plane Door Mid-Flight

A West Australian man has been charged after allegedly abusing another passenger and attempting to open a Qantas plane door mid-flight. Thomas Raymond Forster, 41, was escorted off the plane by armed Australian Federal Police (AFP) officers upon arrival at Perth Airport on Monday afternoon.

Police allege Forster endangered passengers' lives on Qantas flight QF1733 from Karratha. The incident reportedly began with Forster abusing a fellow passenger, followed by him pushing and kicking the seat in front of him. When cabin crew intervened, he allegedly abused them as well.

Forster is further accused of ignoring cabin crew instructions to fasten his seatbelt for landing and subsequently attempting to open the forward passenger door while the aircraft was in the air. As officers led him from the plane, Forster allegedly became aggressive and failed to comply with police directions, leading to his restraint.

He faces charges including causing harm to a Commonwealth public official, an act endangering the safety of an aircraft, failing to comply with crew instructions, and disorderly behavior. If convicted of endangering the safety of an aircraft, Forster could face a maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment.

AFP acting Superintendent Hayly Faithfull emphasized the commitment of the AFP and its partners to ensuring public safety and aviation security. "There is no place for violence or disorderly behaviour on our planes or in our airports," Faithfull stated. "Passengers, cabin crew, airline staff and our officers should not be subjected to anti-social behaviour. The AFP is committed to working closely with airline partners and airport authorities to respond to incidents when they occur, and to take appropriate action where behaviour may be considered to be in breach of the law."

Forster appeared in Perth Magistrates Court on Tuesday and was granted bail. His next court date is scheduled for November 27.
