A 36-year-old man is in hospital under police guard after a carjacking incident in Sydney's central business district resulted in a collision with a pedestrian and a police vehicle.

Man Carjacks Vehicle, Crashes into Pedestrian and Police Car in Sydney

A man is in hospital under police guard after allegedly carjacking a vehicle and subsequently crashing into a pedestrian and a police car in Sydney's central business district on Thursday night.

Emergency services responded to reports of a carjacking at the intersection of King and Pitt Streets around 9 p.m. According to police, a man approached the female driver of a Mazda sedan, allegedly stole the vehicle, and drove down George Street.

The stolen Mazda reportedly collided with a rideshare vehicle at the intersection of Market Street before crashing into a police car parked nearby. The vehicle then allegedly struck a woman in her 50s who was walking along Market Street.

Paramedics treated the pedestrian for a head cut before transporting her to the hospital in a stable condition. The driver of the stolen Mazda was uninjured.

The 36-year-old suspect was arrested at the scene and taken to St. Vincent's Hospital for mandatory testing, where he remains. No charges have been filed at this time.

A crime scene has been established, and investigations into the incident are underway. The events unfolded in front of numerous onlookers, with footage from the scene showing the intersection cordoned off and debris scattered across the street.
