Man Buys Back Lotus Car Sold 35 Years Ago After Divorce, Finds It on eBay

A man who sold his cherished Lotus car during a divorce has successfully purchased it back 35 years later, having spotted it for sale on eBay. Motor mechanic David Reynolds, 69, expressed his delight at being reunited with the 1972 Lotus Europa, noting its remarkably good condition.

Reynolds first acquired the yellow Lotus Europa secondhand in 1980 for £750, a significant purchase for him at the time. He was compelled to sell the vehicle in 1991 due to his divorce. In September of this year, he discovered the car listed on eBay in Sheffield. He recognized it due to distinctive modifications he had made to the interior and black coachlines, which were not an original feature of the model. After reviewing more images, he identified a custom piece of wood around the radio, crafted by a local joiner.

Footage of the car driving allowed him to confirm the license plate matched the one he had sold. Reynolds paid £16,080 to buy back the car, having originally sold it for £4,000. "Now I've paid four times as much to get it back. It's like your shopping bill, prices keep going up," he commented.

Since Reynolds sold it, the Lotus had two owners in Redcar and Sheffield before he found it. His current daily vehicle is a Ford Kuga. He stated that while he had seen similar Lotus Europas over the years, which brought back memories, the eBay listing stood out due to the non-original black coachlines and the specific interior modification.

Reynolds, from Swineshead, Lincolnshire, said he had trouble sleeping the night he rediscovered the car. He reflected on his initial restoration work, noting that previous owners had also maintained the car well. He expressed gratitude for its upkeep and his happiness at seeing it in its current state.

The Lotus Europa, produced from 1966 to 1975, was notable as the first mass-produced car designed with a mid-mounted engine. Reynolds had spent two years restoring his Lotus, including repainting the bodywork, before he was forced to sell it. He described the sale as a blow but necessary to secure his house after his divorce.

He stated the yellow Europa held a special place in his heart, even more so than a black Lotus Europa and a Series 3 Elan he owned at one point, because he had restored it from the ground up. Now remarried to his second wife, Sue, Reynolds plans to use the Lotus for special occasions rather than as an everyday car. He intends to restore it again and has already begun by removing the doors. He is eager to drive it once more after ensuring it is roadworthy.
