Britto Lorence, 27, of Kerala, India, has been sentenced to an 18-month community order with 150 hours of unpaid work after being convicted of outraging public decency. The incident occurred on an Emirates flight traveling from Dubai to Newcastle in June of the previous year.

Lorence was seated next to a mother and her infant son. As the mother rose to attend to her child, she noticed Lorence with a blanket over his lap. Initially fearing he might be concealing a weapon, she soon realized he was masturbating. She alerted the cabin crew, and Lorence was arrested upon the flight's arrival at Newcastle International Airport.

The victim stated she was deeply distressed by the event but managed her emotions to avoid alarming her son. She expressed a sense of blessing and prayed for Lorence when informed she would not need to testify in a trial.

Lorence initially pleaded not guilty to the charge. However, on the scheduled trial date at Newcastle Magistrates' Court in May, he changed his plea to guilty. Subsequently, he attempted to withdraw his guilty plea, claiming he felt pressured into admitting the offense. During a recent hearing, District Judge Kate Meek denied his application to vacate the plea and proceeded with sentencing.

The judge acknowledged Lorence's guilty plea but noted his subsequent efforts to retract it, resulting in minimal credit. She emphasized the seriousness of the offense, particularly given the confined environment of an airplane and the presence of a young child. Lorence was also ordered to pay £914 in costs and a victim surcharge.

At a prior hearing, the prosecution stated that Lorence had a visa to work in the UK and managed a cafe. He holds a Master's degree in food science from Teesside University and a BTech in biotechnology from Abdul Kalam Technological University in India. Lorence continues to deny committing the offense.
