A Mississippi man has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with the death of a woman found hanging from a tree last month. Jarques Ratliff, 51, was taken into custody on Friday after Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney announced the arrest, a significant development in the case of Tasia Fortune, 29.

Fortune's body was discovered on August 3 behind an abandoned house in Jackson. Police stated that Fortune's death was officially classified as a homicide on Thursday evening, which allowed for the issuance of a search and arrest warrant for Ratliff. Officers encountered Ratliff on the street, leading to his arrest.

Brackney indicated that Ratliff had an "association" with Fortune, who was a mother of four. The precise nature of their relationship remains unclear.

"The arrest today is an important development in this investigation but it is not the conclusion," Brackney told reporters. "This case remains active, and additional arrests will be pending as our investigators continue to follow the evidence where it leads... because Tasia and her children deserve nothing less."

Fortune's family had expressed disbelief that she might have died by suicide. Her mother, Christy Spivey, stated that upon hearing of Ratliff's arrest, she began to cry and repeatedly thanked the police. Spivey said she did not know Ratliff and was unaware of any motive for her daughter's death, describing the family as being "in disbelief" and "shock."

"We still don't have a lot of answers," Spivey told The Associated Press.

Brackney confirmed that Fortune's body was found in a hanging position and was in various stages of decomposition. She acknowledged that the case has drawn attention and raised questions, particularly given Mississippi's history. "We understand this case is being viewed through a broader lens, a global lens, and we do not dismiss those concerns. We are taking them seriously," Brackney said. "At the same time, we do have a responsibility to make sure that what we say publicly is supported by our evidence and facts."
