Jackson police have arrested a man in connection with the death of Tasia Fortune, a Black woman whose body was discovered hanging from a tree in August. The state medical examiner’s office has ruled Fortune's death a homicide.
Police Chief RaShall Brackney announced the arrest at a news conference, stating that officers encountered the suspect while he was walking on the street and subsequently arrested him after securing search and arrest warrants. Brackney indicated that the investigation is ongoing and that additional arrests are anticipated.
Officers initially responded to an abandoned home in Jackson on Aug. 3 and found Fortune’s body in the backyard. Her death occurred less than a year after the separate hanging deaths of Trey Reed, a Black college student, and Cory Zukatis, a white man, in Mississippi.
