A man has been arrested and will be charged with homicide in connection with the death of Tasia Fortune, a 29-year-old Black woman whose body was found hanging from a tree in Jackson, Mississippi, on Aug. 3. Fortune, a mother of four, was discovered behind a vacant home in a position of hanging, according to police.

Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney announced Friday that the medical examiner's office classified Fortune's death as a homicide on Thursday, a month after her autopsy was completed. Following the classification, investigators secured two search warrants and an arrest warrant for the suspect, who was taken into custody Friday afternoon. Police stated the suspect had an association with Fortune but did not provide further details.

Brackney indicated that more arrests are anticipated in the case, emphasizing that the investigation remains active. Fortune's body was found in various stages of decomposition, and while police confirmed she was found in a hanging position, the specific cause of death has not been disclosed. The police chief acknowledged that the case has drawn significant attention, referencing Mississippi's history, and assured the public that concerns are being taken seriously while stressing the importance of grounding statements in evidence and facts.
