A U-Haul employee in Nashville, Tennessee, has been arrested and charged with criminal homicide after allegedly shooting and killing a co-worker during a shift.
Devin Rice, 23, was taken into custody on August 5 following the fatal incident at a U-Haul store. Police reported that Rice admitted to arguing with the victim, identified as 56-year-old Fredrick Lytton, over a drink shortly before the shooting. Lytton was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he died from his injuries.
According to the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, Rice allegedly pulled out a pistol and fired several shots at Lytton. After the incident, Rice fled the scene but was later apprehended by authorities.
A neighbor, Joshua Houghtaylen, expressed concern about the rising crime rate in Nashville, telling WSMV that police need to increase efforts to remove firearms from the streets.
In response to the event, Jeff Porter, U-Haul area district vice president of Tennessee, released a statement: "We are shocked and deeply saddened by what occurred. Our concern right now is being there to support the victim’s family and our Team Members affected by this tragic event."
Lytton, described as a dedicated cross-country truck driver, will be remembered for his "strong spirit, perseverance, and love of life," according to his obituary. His family noted his enjoyment of the open road, NASCAR, animals, and classic country music. The obituary concluded, "Though Fred's life was taken too soon, his memories and the love he shared with family and friends will remain forever."
