Man Arrested in Deadly Ireland Arson Attack Was Recently Released from Prison
Authorities suspect the man, recently freed from a burglary sentence, was hired by a gang to carry out the petrol bomb attack that killed four.
A man in his 20s, recently released from prison after serving time for burglary, has been arrested in connection with an arson attack that killed a couple and two of their children in Ireland. Authorities suspect the man was hired by a Traveller gang to carry out the petrol bomb attack on the family's home in the Birchwood estate near Waterford city center early Tuesday. A female accomplice, in her 30s, was also arrested and is believed to have been the driver.
The victims have been identified as Kim English, her husband Philip, and their sons Callum, 12, and Jayden, 9. Two other children, Nadia, 14, and Elliot, 6, remain in critical condition in hospital. Detectives believe the attack occurred when a petrol bomb struck the family's electric car, causing it to explode and ignite the house.
This is not the first instance of violence against the family. Philip English's son from a previous marriage, John James English, stated that gangland figures had been terrorizing the family for years over a £17,000 drug debt owed by someone known to them. Three weeks prior to the fatal attack, the family car had also been targeted with a petrol bomb, though no one was injured in that incident. The home of Philip's ex-wife was also previously targeted in a separate petrol-bomb attack.
"This man is very well-known to gardaí in the area," a senior source told reporters. "He's a hired hand for several gangs in the city and has a history of carrying out attacks on people who owe drug debts."
Gardaí suspect the attack was commissioned by one gang, believed to be headed by three brothers, who then hired the arrested man. Investigators have secured CCTV footage of the vehicle they believe was used in the attack and issued an alert for it. The arrested man and his alleged accomplice are being detained under anti-gangland legislation, which allows for detention for up to seven days before charges must be filed.
Following the arrests, several raids were conducted on properties linked to gangland criminals in the area. Phones, laptops, and vehicles were seized and will undergo forensic examination for evidence. Postmortems on the four deceased victims have been completed, but the results are being withheld for operational reasons.
Family Liaison Officers are continuing to support the bereaved family, who have been updated on the investigation. Gardaí are appealing to the public for any information regarding the attack, particularly from anyone who may have dashcam footage or images from the Birchwood area between 4:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 13.
