Man Arrested in Alleged Plot Against Polish Leaders

Polish authorities have arrested a man in connection with an alleged assassination plot targeting Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, Prime Minister Tusk announced on X, formerly Twitter.

Polish police had received information regarding a potential threat to the nation's top officials. "The man threatening an attack has been detained," Tusk stated on X, commending the police for their "swift and decisive action."

Details regarding the specific nature of the threat and its origin remain unclear. Polish broadcaster Radio Zet reported that police received an email containing information about the potential assassination attempt. The arrest was also confirmed on X by Polish Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski.

Interior ministry spokeswoman Karolina Galecka stated at a press briefing that a report about a potential assassination attempt on Prime Minister Tusk, as well as on Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, was transmitted to the police via the State Protection Service (SOP). The interior ministry had previously indicated that both Tusk and the defense minister might have been targets.

Prime Minister Tusk had previously warned of the potential for Russia to escalate hybrid attacks along NATO's eastern flank. Earlier on Sunday, the interior ministry had directed authorities to take action following the receipt of information about the assassination attempt, and a meeting was convened.

Representatives from the police, the State Protection Service (SOP), and the internal security agency attended the meeting. A spokesman for the minister-coordinator of special services, Jacek Dobrzynski, informed journalists that the matter was being treated with utmost seriousness. He noted an increase in various threats and menacing messages directed towards Poland and its citizens, stating that "in this case we are talking about a strong likelihood that these threats could actually be carried out."

Poland, a member of both NATO and the European Union, has been on heightened alert following a series of stabbing incidents in the past week, which Tusk described on Thursday as a "cult of violence." The country has also experienced cyberattacks attributed to Moscow, positioning it on the front lines of Russia's hybrid warfare efforts against Ukraine's European allies.
