A 40-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a violent clash between two rival motorcycle gangs resulted in the death of a 56-year-old grandfather. The incident occurred on August 6 in Pontnewynydd, south Wales, involving members of the Hells Angels and Vikings motorcycle clubs.
Tony Jones, 56, was found with a fatal head wound in an alleyway after the mass brawl, which reportedly involved weapons such as chains, machetes, and metal bars. Residents attempted first aid before paramedics arrived and transported him to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Two other individuals were also hospitalized following the altercation.
Police launched a murder investigation and an appeal for information on the whereabouts of Anthony Paul Jones, who was believed to be driving a blue Ford Transit van. A van has since been located, and a 40-year-old man was arrested in connection with the murder.
Thus far, a total of 25 men, aged between 18 and 73, have been arrested in connection with the violent disorder. Six remain in police custody, while the other 19 have been released on bail pending further inquiries. Detectives are working to determine the full circumstances of the incident and the extent of involvement of all parties.
Mr. Jones's family described him as a "much-loved husband and devoted dad" and a "much-loved grandfather" affectionately known as 'Grumpy' to his grandchildren. They stated that the loss has left an "impossible" hole in their family and shared memories of his hardworking nature, dedication to his family, and love for spending time with them, including "kitchen discos."
Evidence found on Mr. Jones's Facebook profile, including posts referencing "Support 81 Nomads Wales" and an image equating to 81 (a known Hells Angels nickname), along with a tattoo on his hand reading 'AFFA' (Angels Forever, Forever Angels), suggests his association with the Hells Angels club. The brawl took place near a children's playground.
Detective Superintendent Laura Bartley stated that the investigation is progressing rapidly and confirmed that members of the Vikings and Hells Angels clubs are believed to have been involved in the violent disorder. Police are continuing to establish the full circumstances and the extent of each individual's involvement.
