Man Arrested for Firing Arrows at Cars in UK Town

A 68-year-old man was arrested in Skelmanthorpe, West Yorkshire, after allegedly firing a bow and arrow at passing cars on a busy road. The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. on September 23, 2026.

According to West Yorkshire Police, the man initially began throwing rubbish and household items out of a car while driving dangerously. The situation escalated when he exited his vehicle and began discharging arrows at moving vehicles.

Bystander videos captured the man aiming the bow and arrow at multiple vehicles as they drove down Huddersfield Road. Onlookers were heard expressing alarm, and loud thuds indicated that the arrows were striking the cars. Images later showed arrows embedded in the side of a van and in car tires.

Members of the public intervened and restrained the man until police arrived. No injuries were reported during the incident, although several vehicles sustained damage.

Detective Chief Inspector Oliver Coates acknowledged the community's concern, stating, "We recognise that this incident will have caused understandable concern in the community due to the serious nature of it and the fact it occurred in a busy area and was witnessed by many people." He reassured the public that the situation was resolved without injury, thanks to the intervention of bystanders.

Police are continuing their inquiries to establish the full circumstances of the event. An increased police presence was noted in the area as scenes were examined, with neighborhood policing teams working to reassure residents. Authorities are appealing for any witnesses or individuals with relevant mobile phone, dashcam, or CCTV footage to come forward. The 68-year-old man remains in custody on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon in a public space.
