Man Arrested for Drunk Driving While His Dog Steals Spotlight in Police Bodycam Footage

A 69-year-old man was arrested for driving under the influence after being observed veering across a motorway, with his golden retriever inadvertently becoming the star of the police stop.

Bryan Househam was apprehended by Avon and Somerset Police on September 13 following reports of a grey Toyota RAV4 driving erratically on the M5 near Dursley. Officers tracked the vehicle to the Michaelwood service station, where Househam registered a breathalyzer reading of 142mg, more than four times the legal limit of 35mg.

Bodycam footage released by the police captured the moment Househam rolled down his car window. His golden retriever immediately extended its head, sniffing the officer's arm. The dog then moved from the back seat to be petted by the officer as Househam was questioned about the smell of alcohol emanating from the vehicle.

The video, shared on social media, prompted numerous comments from viewers who expressed affection for the dog and relief that a concerned motorist had reported the driver's behavior. "That dog's saying 'I told him' and even nods when he says have you been drinking," one user commented. Another wrote, "Aw bless the dog. So pleased someone phoned it in. Saved dog's life and others."

Authorities ensured that arrangements were made for a family member to collect the dog following Househam's arrest on suspicion of driving while over the legal limit.

Househam, from Brant Broughton, Lincoln, appeared in court on October 8, where he received a 23-month driving ban and was ordered to pay £2885 in fines. A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police emphasized the importance of public reporting in such cases, stating, "The information provided enabled officers to quickly locate the vehicle and take positive action. Driving under the influence of alcohol puts not only the driver at risk, but also other road users and passengers."
