A Brooklyn man has been arrested and charged with federal arson for allegedly setting a school bus on fire in Times Square on June 14. The incident occurred early in the morning as the city was experiencing celebrations for the New York Knicks' NBA Championship victory and gatherings for the World Cup. Jonathan Strahs, 30, is accused of boarding a school bus that had stopped for pedestrian traffic on West 42nd Street. Surveillance footage reportedly shows Strahs exiting the bus shortly before a fire was discovered inside the vehicle. The blaze spread throughout the bus and onto an adjacent vehicle before firefighters extinguished it. FDNY Fire Marshals determined the fire was intentional. Fire Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore stated that the fire "put the lives of bystanders and first responders at risk" and praised the collaborative efforts of the ATF, NYPD, and FDNY Fire Marshals in apprehending Strahs.

The night of celebrations was marked by widespread public disturbances. In addition to the bus fire, police responded to numerous incidents as thousands of fans took to the streets. Officers were observed struggling to control crowds, with instances of fans climbing on vehicles, subway entrances, and lampposts. One man was tackled and arrested by multiple officers near Madison Square Garden, and a police vehicle sustained damage, including a shattered windshield. The city's transit system also saw disruptions, with debris left in Times Square as burnt-out buses were towed away. One video captured a school bus driver pleading with fans to stop damaging his vehicle, stating the repairs would come out of his pay.

The Knicks secured their first NBA Championship in over 50 years by defeating the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 in Game 5, completing a playoff run that saw them rally from double-digit deficits in all four of their series victories. Jalen Brunson led the team with 45 points in the final game, setting a new Knicks record for points in a finals game. Mikal Bridges and Josh Hart contributed 27 points combined. The team's victory celebration was met with overwhelming fan enthusiasm across the city's boroughs.
